Blinken - Lavrov meeting

New talks between the heads of the Russian Foreign Ministry and the US State Department, Sergei Lavrov and Anthony Blinken, took place in Geneva on Friday, January 21. Their deputies met in the same place last week, but negotiations stalled.

Before the meeting, both Lavrov and Blinken said they did not expect a breakthrough from her. Both diplomats believe that it will not be possible to resolve the differences between the countries in one meeting. At the same time, they noted that they are glad to see each other and intend to continue the dialogue.

At separate press conferences, both Lavrov and Blinken did not make loud statements, noting that they intended to continue diplomatic efforts. At the same time, the tone of their statements was much softer than that of the participants in the negotiations that took place a week ago.

After the Russia-US and Russia-NATO meetings, Russian diplomats again started talking about the use of "military measures." These warnings, and the ensuing large-scale military exercise in Belarus, for which Russian troops were deployed from the Far East, increased fears in the West that the Kremlin might launch a new war on Ukrainian territory.
