China refuses to host the tournament due to a pandemic

China has declared it will not host the 2023 Asian Cup owing to pandemic concerns. The new host of the tournament will be determined in the coming days.

After extensive discussions with the Chinese Football Association, the country has announced that it will not be able to host the 2023 Asian Cup, the AFC said in a statement.

China has told the Asian Football Confederation that it will not be able to host the tournament, which is scheduled to take place in its 10 cities from June 16 to July 16, 2023, due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

"While preparing, we worked closely with the Chinese Football Association and the local organizing committee. A number of crucial steps were taken, including the launch of the tournament logo and the opening of the Shanghai Pudong Football Stadium last year," the report revealed.

The AFC informed that the Chinese Football Association and the local organizing committee appreciated the difficult but necessary decision in the public interest. Further information on the next steps towards hosting the 2023 Asian Cup will be announced soon.

Earlier, the XIX Asian and Paralympic Games, scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China, on September 10-25 this year, were also reported to be procrastinated for a year due to the complex epidemiological situation with COVID-19 in the country.
