EU special representative on sanctions to visit Uzbekistan

"We respect the views of countries that do not support sanctions against Russia. But we would not like them to become a platform for circumventing sanctions," David O'Sullivan, the European Union's Special Representative for Sanctions, said at a briefing in Bishkek today.

According to him, the work on the prevention of sanctions bypassing starts in the EU itself. In addition, we need to closely monitor the situation in partner states and signals that suggest sanctions are being circumvented.

"Our task is to ensure the effective implementation of sanctions. After analysing trade flows, we are seeing significant growth, which was not there before. Kyrgyzstan is one such country. But I note that it is not the only country. I have visited the UAE, Turkiye. I intend to visit Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Georgia and Armenia," David O'Sullivan noted.

Earlier, Bright Uzbekistan reported that the EU may impose trade sanctions on Uzbekistan and other CIS countries that help Russia buy washing machines, used cars and other equipment to repair tanks.

EU officials are said to be planning to hold diplomatic talks with Central Asian countries first to warn them of the consequences. Kazakhstan, one of Moscow's closest partners in the region, has already promised to control goods passing through the country.
