Next steps to implement the recommendations of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child for Uzbekistan

Today, November 16 as part of the global commemorations of the anniversary on the Convention on the Rights of the Child and Uzbekistan’s 30th anniversary on ratifying the international treaty, parliamentarians discussed a way forward on implement the recommendation by the International Committee on the Rights of the Child recommendations in the best interest of children in Uzbekistan, today during a special round table.

Hosted by the Chairperson of the Senate, Tanzila Narbaeva, the special roundtable convened Members of the Senate and Youth Parliament, Child Rights Ombudsperson, representatives of the National Human Rights Center and ministries discussed concluding observations of the UN CRC Committee made for Uzbekistan on 23 September 2022.

Speaking at the special round table, UNICEF Regional Director emphasized the importance of two critical aspects on the implementation of the recommendations, namely parliamentary oversight and the importance of evidence- based decision making.

The CRC Committee recommended incorporation of all principles and provisions of the Convention into domestic legislation and their application by relevant authorities, participants discussed legislative initiatives and child rights priorities to address gaps and enhance oversight for the CRC implementation in the country.

Further government representatives shared current plans to implement the Concluding Observations of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child taking into account the general principles such as non-discrimination; best interests of the child; the right to life, survival and development; respect for the views of the child.
