Syria switches to a four-day workweek because of the fuel crisis

It was reported that the Syrian government decided to introduce a temporary four-day workweek in public institutions. It is said that the decision was taken because of a fuel shortage and currency devaluation.

According to sources, the official weekends in Syria fall on Friday and Saturday. Public institutions will also be closed on the following Sundays - December 11 and 18. The innovation does not apply to institutions, which should be uninterrupted. In addition, classes have been canceled at a number of institutions of higher education.

Amr Salim, Syria's minister of domestic trade, explained that bakeries and hospitals will not be closed. So far, he said, 142 gas stations in the country have been closed due to trade violations. According to him, it is not yet known how to solve the fuel shortage situation.

Oil Minister Bassam Toam said that the crisis began 50 days ago, but the problem has been resolved thanks to the available fuel reserves. The situation worsened because of the delay of oil tankers.
