Turkmenistan will hold early presidential elections

Turkmenistan will hold early presidential elections on March 12, 2022.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov made a statement at a special session of the upper house of the Turkmen parliament yesterday on the need to allow young leaders in government.

"I support the idea that at a new stage of development of the country, young leaders who have been brought up in a rich spiritual environment in public administration and should meet the requirements of the times should be allowed," the President of Turkmenistan said in his speech.

According to Turkmen media, the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda has been instructed to take appropriate action in accordance with Turkmenistan's constitution and legislation.

"On the instructions of the President of Turkmenistan, the Central Election Commission of the country has begun preparations for the early presidential elections scheduled for March 12," the statement said.

PS: A citizen of Turkmenistan, born in Turkmenistan, not younger than 40 years old, fluent in the state language, who has lived and worked in Turkmenistan for the last 15 years can be elected President of Turkmenistan. The President of Turkmenistan is elected by the people of Turkmenistan for 7 years and takes office after taking the oath. The last presidential election in Turkmenistan was held in 2017. By law, the next presidential election should be held in 2024.
