A sapper rat in Tanzania died after discovering over a hundred mines throughout her lifespan

A sapper rat named Magawa was 8 years old. She was born in 2013 at the Agricultural University of Tanzania. There she was taught to search for explosives underground by smell. In 2020, the rat was awarded the PDSA Gold Medal. This is the highest reward an animal can receive for courage. Magawa retired in 2021.
