Car sales fall in Russia

Sales of cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia in May decreased by 83.5% to 24.2 thousand, which was stated in the report of the European Business Association (EBA).

In the first five months of 2022, passenger car sales in Russia fell by 52% to 318,000 units. The previous anti-record in the country was set in April, when 32.7 thousand new cars were sold, down 78.5%.

Sales of AvtoVAZ cars plunged 84% in May to 6,000 units. At the same time, production was halted for a month due to lack of spare parts in AvtoVAZ. Sales of Kia in May curtailed by 81% compared to the same period last year, Hyundai - by 82%, Renault - by 86%, Skoda - by 92% (less than a thousand cars sold).

The remarkable decline was recorded in the Lexus brand - sales fell by 99% (only 20 cars were sold). FIAT saw a dwindle of 98% (2 cars sold), Volvo - 96% (38 cars sold).

Chinese manufacturers Geely and Changan indicated “satisfactory” results than the Europeans: they lost 55% and 27%, respectively.

In May, UAZ and GAZ also saw a slight decline - 41% and 57%, respectively. In the period from January to May, compared to 2021, GAZ sales abated by 32% to 13 thousand, and UAZ cars dwindled by 21% to 10.3 thousand.

The top five best-selling models include: Lada Granta, Lada Vesta, Kia Rio, Hyundai Creta and Lada Niva.

In January-April 2022, Uzbekistan imported 848 cars from Russia.
