China sentences ex-Ministry of State Security general to capital punishment

China's Changchun Intermediate People's Court has publicly sentenced to death a former member of the Party Committee of the Ministry of State Security, ex-general Liu Yanping for accepting more than 234 million yuan (about
(about $34 million). It was reported by the Chinese daily Thepaper on Tuesday, January 10.

The court found that from 2001 to 2022, Liu Yanping illegally assisted third parties in business and settling various cases.

It is noted that the former official was sentenced to death with a suspended sentence of two years. The defendant pleaded guilty and repented.

"Upon expiry of the two-year stay, the death sentence may be commuted to life imprisonment in accordance with the law, with no possibility of commutation or parole," the report said.

Liu Yanping was also sentenced to confiscation of all personal property, according to the court ruling.

Earlier, in September 2022, a Changchun court sentenced Sun Lijun, China's former deputy public security minister, to death. He was accused of accepting bribes, manipulating the securities market and illegal possession of weapons.
