Earth quakes in Turkiye rank among the top ten most destructive earthquakes on land

Edwin Nissen, a scientist and professor of seismology, said the earthquakes in Turkiye were "one of the five or ten strongest tremors ever recorded on land". Because of the magnitude of the disaster and the fact that it occurred in a densely populated part of Turkey, it was devastating.

Nissen also noted that the strongest earthquakes usually occur in the oceans.

The latest figures put the death toll from the earthquake in Turkiye at 31,643 and the number of injured at 158,168.
