Fifth person in the world fully cured of HIV

A 53-year-old stem cell transplant patient in Germany has been completely cured of HIV. Researchers have announced that his body is now free of the virus.

The man is known to have stopped taking his HIV medication four years ago. This is not a long-term remission but a true cure.

It is noted that this is the fifth confirmed case in the world. All the patients treated had received stem cell transplants to treat their blood cancers. Their donors have a genetic mutation that makes them resistant to HIV, which only 1% of the world's population has.
