Frosts as low as minus 75°C in Russia: a 97-year-old record broken?

Locals have reported that temperatures have dropped to minus 73-75 degrees Celsius in the village of Yessey in Russia's Krasnoyarsk Territory. However, the Central Siberian Department of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring was unable to confirm the residents' report, as there is no weather station in Essey.

Local resident Andrei Miroshko said that on the night of January 10 to 11, the temperature in the village cooled to minus 73-75 degrees. "Well, today the air is -64 degrees, but the picture from the embankment yesterday showed -72 degrees and even three units lower. And that's practically -75 degrees," Andrei Miroshko said.

Also, he said, with abnormal cold there are headaches, difficulty in breathing, but there is firewood, water, there were no power outages in the village and shops also work.

According to the CDPH, weather stations in the nearest settlements to Essei show -53-54 degrees below freezing.

"Essei does not have a weather station, so I cannot officially confirm this. Local thermometers there may show -75 degrees, but I doubt their reliability. We cannot confirm or deny it," said Dmitry Ulyanov, an employee of the Central State Statistics Service.

P.S. According to sources, 97 years ago there was a record low temperature of -71 degrees in Russia and it was recorded in the Yakut village of Oymyakon.
