India will soon surpass China in population

According to the United Nations, India will become the most populous country in the world by mid-2023, ahead of China. India's population may exceed China's by about 2.9 million.

Projections suggest India's population will reach approximately 1.4286 billion in a few months, but since no official census has been conducted in the country since 2011, this may not be an accurate count.

For reference, China has been the world's leading country in terms of population since the 1950s, that is, since the UN started publishing population data.

Both countries now have over 1.4 billion people, and together they make up a third of the world's 8 billion people.
