Jamaica wants to declare itself a republic

According to The Gleaner, the Jamaican government wants to change the law by depriving Queen Elizabeth II of her status as head of the Caribbean.

He said Prime Minister Andrew Holness made the announcement during a meeting with Duke William of Cambridge, the queen's grandson, who was on an official visit to Jamaica. "We are moving forward and we intend to realize our original ambitions as an independent, developed and prosperous state as soon as possible”, he said.

The visit by a member of the royal family sparked anti-colonial protests, with participants demanding that Britain pay compensation for slavery and speed up the transformation of Jamaica into a republic.
