Janice Helwig: The cancellation of the boycott of Uzbek cotton by the international coalition Cotton Campaign is an important event

On June 15, Tanzila Narbaeva, Chairwoman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Chairwoman of the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, met with Janice Helwig, Senior Political Adviser to the US Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (Helsinki Commission).

A number of important issues were discussed at the meeting. In particular, attention was drawn to the great achievements of Uzbekistan in recent years in the field of forced labor and the elimination of child labor.

In this regard, the representative of the Helsinki Commission stressed that, as a specialist dealing with the problems of combating human trafficking and gender issues, as well as with 25 years of experience working with Central Asia, she is pleased to recognize the significant successes of Uzbekistan in recent years in the field of the eradication of forced and child labor in the republic. In her opinion, the cancellation of the boycott of Uzbek cotton by the Cotton Campaign international coalition is also a landmark event.

Helwig also stressed the stability of Uzbekistan's relations with the OSCE, especially the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). He expressed hope that the country would continue to implement the recommendations and guidelines of the OSCE.
