MPs approve criminalization of domestic violence

On March 23 this year, the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis adopted a package of amendments to the Criminal and Administrative Codes of the Republic of Uzbekistan to protect women and minors from violence.
The basis of the bill was developed by a working group of activists and experts under the Senate, which up to the end defended the most progressive amendments to the law. Domestic violence was transferred to the category of criminal offenses, punishment for economic and psychological violence, as well as for violence against minors, was toughened.
"I consider this a victory for civil society and activists. A victory for common sense and justice." - writes Saida Mirziyoyeva.
