The first cases of infection with the omicron strain were detected in Russia
On November 25, South Africa discovered a new variant of Covid-19 - B.1.1.529 - with a "very unusual combination" of mutations.

Two patients who arrived from South Africa to Russia were confirmed to be infected with the omicron strain. This was reported in Rospotrebnadzor, writes Interfax.

In total, ten tourists are reported to have contracted this variant of the virus in South Africa.

In two patients with a positive PCR test, obtained on the first day of stay in the observatory, as a result of genome-wide sequencing carried out by the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, the omicron strain was confirmed.

In total, it is known about 10 arrivals to Russia from South Africa, who were confirmed to be infected with COVID-19.

On November 26, the World Health Organization found that B.1.1.529 - Omicron - has a higher likelihood of human re-infection. As of December 4, Omicron has been found in 38 countries.
