Presidential election campaign has started in Turkmenistan

The presidential election campaign in Turkmenistan commenced its activity on February 14, 2022. Pursuant to Turkmenistan's election code, political parties and groups of citizens registered in the country have the right to nominate candidates before the election.

Political parties must nominate a candidate at their convention. There are three political parties in the country: the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan, the Agrarian Party of Turkmenistan, and the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan.

The Democratic Party of Turkmenistan held its ninth extraordinary congress on Monday, where party members nominated Turkmen First Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Berdymukhammedov (son of incumbent President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov) for the presidency.

At the party's congress, participants listened to a speech by Serdar Berdymukhammedov and supported his candidacy for the presidency.

Serdar Berdimuhamedov was born in 1981. He graduated from the Niyazov Turkmen Agricultural University named after S.A Niyazov. From 2008 to 2011, he studied International Relations at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Serdar Berdymukhammedov has held various positions in the government and was appointed First Deputy Prime Minister in 2021.

P.S: President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, who attended a special session of the upper house of the Turkmen parliament in Ashgabat on February 11, mentioned that he now intends to use his political experience as chairman of the People's Council to develop the country and give his place to young people.
