Shavkat Mirziyoyev approves Iran's accession to SCO

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a decree "On Approval of the International Treaty". This international treaty provides for the Islamic Republic of Iran to receive the status of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member state.

According to the document, in accordance with Article 22 of the Law "On International Treaties of the Republic of Uzbekistan", a memorandum on commitments of the Islamic Republic of Iran to obtain the status of a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), signed in Samarkand on 16 September 2022, was approved.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was instructed to submit the appropriate notification to the SCO Secretariat with regard to Uzbekistan's fulfillment of domestic procedures necessary for the entry into force of this international treaty.

For reference, Iran became an SCO observer state in 2005. On September 16 last year in Samarkand a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Iran in order to receive the status of an SCO member state, and on November 27 the National Assembly adopted a bill on Iran's accession to the organization.
