Sri Lankan president and prime minister agree to resign amid protests

There are large protests in the country caused by dissatisfaction with the economic situation. Sri Lankan party leaders believe that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ranila Wikramasinghe should step down.

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will step down in the coming days. This was announced on July 9 by Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeiwardena. The head of state will leave his post on July 13 in order to "peacefully secure the transfer of power," Abeiwardena explained.

Earlier on Saturday, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe said he was ready to leave his post at the request of party leaders.
