Tatiana Valovaya: "Parliament is key to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals

Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva received the UN Under-Secretary General, Director General of the UN Office in Geneva Tatiana Valovaya. During the meeting the sides discussed important issues of multilateral active and effective cooperation of the Republic of Uzbekistan with the United Nations Organization.
President of the Senate Narbayeva stressed that Uzbekistan's interaction with the United Nations and its specialized agencies has attained a qualitatively new level in recent years. Our country has demonstrated its commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other major international treaties and strictly fulfills its obligations.
During the conversation, views have been exchanged on various aspects of effective interaction between Uzbekistan and the UN, including in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. In particular, it was noted that a Parliamentary Commission to monitor the implementation of the National Goals and targets for sustainable development until 2030 was established and the government's activities on their implementation are regularly monitored.
In turn, UN Deputy Secretary General Tatiana Valovaya, noting the work done in the framework of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UN, stressed the importance of implementing the above goals through continuous improvement of legislation, where the parliamentary dimension is a key decisive factor.
The dialogue focused on human rights and freedoms, gender equality, equal rights and the empowerment of women and girls.
