Ukraine has applied for membership in the European Union

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has submitted a completed application for Ukraine's EU membership to Matti Maasikas, head of the European Union's delegation to Ukraine.

"Today, one of the steps has been taken for our country to join the European Union, and our people are moving towards Europe and fighting for it", Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian leader expressed hope for Kiev's support and candidacy to join the society.

Zelensky applied to join the European Union on February 28, four days after Russia launched a special operation in Ukraine. The document is addressed to the Council of Europe, European Parliament leaders, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron, who holds the rotating presidency of the European Union.

During a visit to Kiev on April 8, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen submitted a request to the Ukrainian president to join the European Union.
