US Department of State issues statement on elections in Uzbekistan

The US State Department supports the people of Uzbekistan in exercising their right to vote in the October 24 presidential elections.

The statement said they agree with the observation by the OSCE / ODIHR mission that the vote was peaceful and characterized by high voter turnout.

In addition, the United States welcomes the improved cooperation between the Uzbek government and the OSCE-ODIHR observer mission, and encourages the government to implement all OSCE recommendations regarding elections and the promotion of civil and political rights.

Also, the US State Department welcomed cooperation with the government of Uzbekistan on these and many other issues of bilateral and regional importance.
