Uzbek sign language and Braille will be taught in public educational institutions

Since January 1, 2023, special training courses for teaching Uzbek sign language and Braille will be organized in general education institutions and mono-centers "Ishga Marhamat".

Presidential Decision on additional measures for the development of Uzbek sign language and Braille has been adopted.

Under the Decision, one of the main areas of development of Uzbek sign language and the Braille alphabet was the implementation of comprehensive measures to further develop and enhance the legal status of Uzbek sign language and encourage its use as a means of communication.

Special training courses are free of charge for persons with visual, hearing or speech disabilities and for parents or substitutes of the above categories of minors, while others have to pay a fee.

As of 1 January 2023, no less than five percent of the weekly broadcasting time on public television channels will be in sign language interpretation, closed captioning or "ticker tape".

As of the academic year 2024/2025, only teachers who are proficient in the sign language of instruction will be hired to teach in special education institutions for deaf and hard of hearing children.

In formation of parameters of the state order for admission to higher education institutions for academic year 2023/2024, the admission rates on the basis of the state grant in fields of deaf education and typhlo-pedagogy shall be increased by 25%.
