Uzbekistan to cut methane emissions by 30% in next seven years

In Uzbekistan, by 2030, methane emissions will be reduced by 30 percent. This was announced by the chairman of the Committee of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan on the development of the Aral Sea region and ecology, Bory Alikhanov, who took part in a high-level meeting of the General Assembly, held on March 30 at the UN headquarters in New York.

Alikhanov, during his speech, noted that the concept of environmental protection and the strategy for the transition to a “green economy” until 2030 were adopted, within which 100% of the population will be provided with services for the collection and removal of solid domestic waste, an increase in the level of processing of generated household waste by 65 percent, as well as the widespread introduction of the principles of "economic circulation" and the tasks set are being consistently fulfilled.

According to him, these measures will reduce household waste emissions to landfills by up to 60 percent, fully develop more than 200 landfills, turn them into green areas, and create new jobs.

The meeting also announced that Uzbekistan has joined the global commitment to reduce methane emissions in 2022 and intends to reduce their volume by 30 percent by 2030.
