WHO: Number of people infected with smallpox virus worldwide exceeds 84,000

More than 84,700 people worldwide have been infected with the mpox (monkeypox) virus since 1 January last year, according to another report from the World Health Organisation. In the last week alone, the number of people infected increased by 302.

However, this is 44 fewer than in the first week of January this year.

It is noted that the disease has spread to 110 countries over the past year. 80 infected patients have died as a result of the disease.

The countries with the highest number of cases are:

USA - 29,800;
Brazil - 10,600;
Spain - 7,500;
France - 4,100;
Colombia - 4,000.

According to the analysis, 96.6% of those infected with Mpoxa were between 29 and 41 years old.
