World Cup. Offside is determined by AI

FIFA will introduce a semi-automatic offside system at the World Cup in Qatar.
It is reported by The Guardian.

According to the report, the new technology should reduce the game time detection time to 4 seconds. The decision to introduce artificial intelligence was made by the Board of the International Football Association. The new system uses the same process as the gate crossing technology.

The principle of operation of the system is that it sends a notification to the assistant video arbitrator as soon as possible. He then decides on the extent of the player's impact on the offside episode.

Cameras and computers monitor players and the ball, and artificial intelligence can detect when a player is offside at any time the ball is kicked.
