The founder of the "Korean Amazon" became a billionaire after a successful IPO. He dropped out of Harvard to start a business.
South Korean e-commerce giant Coupang held the largest IPO in the United States in 2021, considering the founder Bom Kim a multi-billionaire. The entrepreneur's fortune has grown to $ 11.1 billion. Kim attended Harvard Business School, but dropped out to return to South Korea and start his company in 2010.
Coupang's U.S. IPO was the largest for Asian companies since Alibaba in 2014, the BBC reports. While the company remains unprofitable, its revenue nearly doubled in 2020 due to the surge in online shopping during the pandemic.
Coupang rose 41% during its first trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, March 11. It became the largest IPO in the US since Uber went public in 2019. Coupang is often referred to the South Korean Amazon.
The largest investor of the company is the Japanese multinational corporation SoftBank. It has been announced that the company will provide warehouse workers and 15 thousand full-time couriers with shares worth $ 90 million.
