In the USA, it was allowed to grow purple GM tomatoes

The US state inspection (APHIS) allowed the cultivation of a genetically modified tomato variety on the territory of the country. These tomatoes are saturated with useful anthocians, the reports say.

It is noted that the color of tomatoes is unusual — purple. It is the anthocians who give it this hue. To create a new variety, scientists added a coordinator of the synthesis of anthocians to its gene. And the coordinator is derived from the perennial plant — Dragonfly (antirrinum, Latin — Antirrhinum).

In 2008, Katie Martin and her colleagues at this research center demonstrated tomatoes enriched with an unusual genetically modified anthocyanin. These plant pigments are considered very useful: they act as antioxidants, reduce inflammation, reduce the risk of diabetes and hypertension.

Experiments have also proven that mice fed with purple tomatoes live a little longer.

The USA is the only country where it is allowed to grow purple tomatoes with a modified gene. The next country is expected to be Great Britain.
